URL Encoder / Decoder Frequently asked questions
- Component mode (encodeURIComponent) encodes everything except unreserved characters - use it for individual query values. Full URI mode (encodeURI) leaves : / ? & = # alone so a complete URL stays a valid URL.
- Whenever text goes inside a URL query string: spaces, ampersands, question marks, unicode characters and emoji all need percent-encoding or they'll corrupt the URL's structure.
- %20 is the percent-encoded form of a space. Paste the URL into the Decode tab to turn it back into readable text.
- Yes - unicode characters are UTF-8 encoded first, then percent-encoded, which is the web standard. Emoji work too.
