The Universal Product Code (UPC-A) is the foundational barcode standard for consumer goods throughout the United States and Canada. Introduced in 1974, UPC-A encases exactly 12 numeric digits representing the product manufacturer and individual SKU item code, allowing high-speed optical scanning at supermarket and retail cash registers.
Number System & Manufacturer Prefix
The first digit identifies the numbering category (such as standard goods, weighted produce, or pharmacy coupons). The subsequent 5 digits correspond to the company prefix assigned by GS1 US, followed by the 5-digit product code selected by the brand owner.
Modulo-10 Checksum Algorithm
The 12th digit guarantees optical scanning accuracy. Digits in odd positions (1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11) are multiplied by 3, while digits in even positions are summed directly. Subtracting the unit value from 10 yields the check digit, preventing cashier key-in typos and scan misidentifications.

What is the difference between UPC-A and EAN-13?
UPC-A is 12 digits and is primarily used in the United States and Canada. EAN-13 is 13 digits and is standard across the rest of the world. A UPC-A barcode can be converted into an equivalent EAN-13 by prepending a leading zero (0).
Can I generate barcodes for commercial products on Amazon or Walmart?

What is the minimum recommended print size for reliable scanning?
For standard smartphone camera scanning at close range (0.3–0.5 meters), print QR codes at a minimum size of 2 x 2 cm (0.8 x 0.8 inches). For posters and billboards, use a 10:1 distance-to-size ratio (e.g., a code scanned from 2 meters away should be at least 20 cm wide).
Are generated codes permanent, and do they ever expire?
All codes generated on BeYourTools are static and permanent. The encoded data (such as your URL, text, or barcode number) is directly baked into the graphical modules with zero server redirection, meaning they will function forever without expiration.
