BMI Calculator Frequently asked questions
- BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)². In imperial units that's 703 × weight (lb) ÷ height (in)². The tool does both conversions for you.
- Under 18.5 is underweight, 18.5–24.9 healthy, 25–29.9 overweight, 30+ obese (WHO cutoffs). They're population-level screening bands, not diagnoses.
- Not always - BMI can't tell muscle from fat, so very muscular people can score 'overweight' while being lean. Treat it as a rough screening tool, not a verdict; waist circumference and body-fat estimates add context.
- It's the weight range that would put your BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 at your height - a concrete target band rather than a single ideal number.
