How to Use JSON Flatten / Unflatten

  1. 1.Paste nested JSON Paste a JSON object with any level of nesting.
  2. 2.Choose Flatten or Unflatten Select Flatten to collapse to dot-path pairs, or Unflatten to rebuild nested structure from flat keys.
  3. 3.View the result The output shows the transformed JSON.
  4. 4.Copy the result Copy the flattened or unflattened JSON for use in your project.

JSON Flatten / Unflatten & JSON Developer Standards

JSON is the standard format for web APIs and modern applications. Using the JSON Flatten / Unflatten helps you check syntax, catch formatting errors, and keep your data clean and readable.

Zero-Server Security

All data entered into JSON Flatten / Unflatten runs directly inside your browser sandbox. Nothing is ever sent across the network or saved on remote servers.

Clean & CI/CD Ready

Well-formatted JSON prevents runtime syntax bugs, makes code reviews easier, and ensures smooth API data exchange.

JSON Flatten / Unflatten Frequently Asked Questions

What does flattening JSON mean?

Flattening converts nested JSON like {"a":{"b":{"c":1}}} into a flat object with dot-path keys like {"a.b.c":1}. Every value in the original, no matter how deeply nested, becomes a key at the top level with its full path as the key name.

What is unflattening?

Unflattening is the reverse: it takes a flat object with dot-path keys and rebuilds the nested structure. It is the inverse operation of flattening.

What separator is used in the flattened keys?

By default the tool uses a dot (.) as the separator, producing keys like user.address.city. Some variants use forward slashes or underscores. The separator can be configured in the tool options.

How are arrays handled during flattening?

Array indices become part of the path. For example, {"items":[{"id":1}]} flattens to {"items.0.id":1}. Unflattening correctly reconstructs arrays from numeric indices in the path.

Can this tool handle large, complex JSON payloads?

Yes. Because the tool operates directly inside modern V8 JavaScript execution engines, it easily processes complex multi-megabyte payloads containing thousands of nested keys with negligible latency.

Are my proprietary payloads or secrets stored or cached?

No. BeYourTools implements zero tracking, zero telemetries, and zero database persistence. Everything stays strictly inside your browser memory and disappears the moment your tab is closed.
